Prototype energy models for data centers

Data centers in the United States consume about two percent of nation’s electricity. Because heat gains from IT equipment drive cooling demand, data offer unique opportunities for energy savings. However, no prototype model is available suite existing U.S. Department Energy’s Commercial Prototype Building Models. This study presented development new center models and their implementation OpenStudio EnergyPlus. The small-size represents a computer room building served by air conditioners (CRACs); while large-sized stand-alone handlers (CRAHs) with central chiller plant. For each model, levels (ITE) load density were considered, to cover wide range power centers: 40 100 W/ft2 (430 1076 W/m2) room, 500 (1076 5382 center. All other assumptions, such as envelope, lighting, HVAC efficiencies schedules, based on minimal requirements ASHRAE Standard 90.1 at various vintages.
